Record Status Shoots

Any thoughts or comments on the subject of record status shoots?

Think they are a great idea. Really enjoyed both Dunbrody and Limerick. Thought both events were very well run. However I have seen people getting really annoyed when they find their equipment is not within spec. I think IFAF should show the requirements for each style( Available on the IFAA site). I also think that shop owners have a responsibility ensure that people are aware when buying what style their bow will fall into.

there are ok but there was a lot of anoyed people over bows which got both archer and organiserers goat up which got a bit nasty it should have been resolved in a quite mannor instead of annoying other archers.when is the next record shoot on..........................

Having competed in the WBHC in Switzerland I have to say that I think record status shoots are a fantastic idea. I was a little cocky about my abilities until I saw how it's realy done. I had it handed to me in Switzerland. I reckon, if we're ever to compete, and be taken seriously on the international circuit then we need more record status shoots. They're the only way we're going to improve the standard of competitive field archery in Ireland. Fine, I hear the complaints already, but there is nothing to stop the recreational archers from shooting from an easier peg if they wish. Perhaps the course layers of the record status shoots could put in a recreational peg for those not wishing to compete at such a level. And finally a quick comment on the classification of bows, it is not the responsibility of IFAF or anybody running a shoot to ensure that your bow fits into the class you're entering, but your own. Their job is only to enforce the rules as they stand. If somebody has a bow which turns out not to be what they thought it was then it's up to them to take the matter up with the person or persons from whom the bow was purchased. Anyway, thats my tuppence worth, who's next for the soapbox?

I agree with Tony's comments about the standard seen in Switzerland. If we have any real ambitions about competing at that sort of level, we do need to have tougher courses here in Ireland. That having been said, some of the more enjoyable shoots haven't been record status. I think there is a balance to be struck between satisfying those who want to get practice for major tournaments and those who want to shoot for recreation only. Tony's suggestion about alternative pegs is a good one.

After the UK& Ireland champs it was a bit sobering to see how far off the mark we really are. The guys that came over were like robots and that came from shooting competitively on field and hunter courses every month not 2d then 3d but only roundels. I know they are not as much fun but if we are serious about being competitive internationally then I think clubs may have to organise these shoots more regularly but not always rated shoots

Following on from my last message maybe it is time to start organising like minded individuals to start meeting up and training on difficult uphill/downhill courses and preparing properly for international shoots. It does not have to be a full shoot just three or four targets representing the 20/35/50 and 65cm faces at difficult angles. Any ideas?

Aidan, It's not only the field (roundels) events where we get shown up. I personally have no interest in shooting roundels, if I want to shoot that type of target I'll shoot target (FITA) archery, but the difference in the level of proficiency I witnessed in Switzerland, on both 3D and paper animal rounds was staggering.Anybody who was privileged enough to compete in the World Championships will tell you, we need to take a long hard look at ourselves as regards our commitment to training and the difficulty level of our domestic competition. There's little point in being able to boast of scoring a near perfect round at home and then going to an international and finding out that you're not even playing the same game. I would state however, that I would not like to see a situation arise where those who want to shoot for the pure joy of shooting would feel excluded, and would like to see provision made for them, even on championship courses, by means of alternative pegs or some such arrangement.

Fair point Tony but as a member of both IAAA and IFAF as well i dont think there is much interest in shooting the Field courses within IAAA. Personally I try to train every day and would like to be able to compete at as high a level as possible( plenty more practice required) but shoting roundels on flat fields is never going to teach the field craft for estimating angles for shooting marked or range estimation for shooting unmarked distances.I agree that people shooting for pleasure should not be excluded. My question can we not investigate a way between all the clubs/interested archers that are there to organise coaching from experienced field archers on courses that have more up and down hill shots. I dont mind if that is 2D/3D or roundels the techniques to be learned should apply across all targets
